Alternative country in a restless city

Richard Nygard studied Fine Arts in Antwerp, but returned home with a suitcase full of music. Together with his band The Beautybag he released the debut album „Heavy Luggage“ in 2012. The music focuses on the young man’s encounter with the urban Europe, where distance relationships, enthusiasm and restlessness is the theme for the Hamsun-like protagonist. The band consists of Richard Nygård – vocals and guitar, Morten Kristiansen Minothi – bass André Viervoll – Hammond organ and electric piano, Eivind Molden Norseng – electric guitar and pedal steel, Sigmund Nilsen – drums. Nygård also appears solo, or with his longtime bass player.

The Beautybag has performed at venues in Oslo such as Skuret, Magneten, Månefisken, Revolver, Buckleys, Herr Nilsen og Café Mono. In addition, the band has played several concerts in Belgium and Germany.

Radio play
The singles „A Public Park“ and „Ain’t the One You Had in Mind“ has received much radio play, and the latter is currently listed on NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting). The album was album of the week on Radio Ludo, and the regularly Oradio.

In the press The album „Heavy Luggage“ was well recieved by critics. „Nygård is really spoiling us with a kind of prose that we rarely get from Norwegian songwriters. And he has put together a bunch of splendid melodies to accompany them.“ (Firdaposten). „The Beautybag finds its own musical expression in an exciting hybridization between a variety of genres.“ (Hamar Arbeiderblad)
